Finally tonight… really, really enjoyed “Funny People.” Seriously funny, but this is also a serious film with challenging themes, including the notion of “celebrity,” human nature and the capacity for people to change. It’s an unflinchingly real portrait of its characters and their difficult existence in the way that “Knocked Up” was (and “40-Year-Old Virgin” wasn’t), yet there’s added dimension - we see kindness to a fault, people in their worst moments, and are ultimately reminded of the importance of friendship & not letting the people closest to us slip away. It’s not your typical Apatow movie (and the box office totals this weekend reflect that), but he has succeeded in a big way. Go check it out.
